Dearest Niece,

I hadn’t appreciated what an interesting little apartment that is – and Belsize Park so handy for town. If I’d known, I would have swapped places with you, and had you sleep in the townhouse. And the convenience of a modern kitchen! Jack and I toiled long enough to earn ourselves a plate of eggs and bacon, and watching Maude prepare our lunch was a joy. And then, of course, after we’d managed to eat it, I had to get the smell of bacon out of my hair, as I was due at a bridge game with my usual crowd in the afternoon. And if Cecily and I had been playing for money I’d be in Monte Carlo by now! We wiped the floor with the other pair and left the club cock-a-hoop, although Mary said she didn’t think they’d agree to play with us again. Said something about our attitude being “off”.

Anyway, back to the apartment. I had to get the smell of bacon out of my hair, so Maude ran me a bath, and oh! So warm! How wonderful those radiators are – and so much hot water. It’s made me think twice about my place in Pimlico, I can tell you. I shall be informing your uncle that funds are required to modernise it, and I’m sure he’ll be able to claim it as something or other at the end of the financial year.

Now, as far as our investigations go, Maude, Jack and I popped round to you-know-who’s flat and – oh – I’ve already written to you about that, haven’t I? Well, it WAS very nice, and we paid particular attention to the room Jack’s staying in. She said she’d already had a go at the cabinet and the trunk and hadn’t had any luck with either of them, so I had a go at them and I got nowhere with them either. Finally, we decided stricter measures were required, and Jack tripped over a handkerchief and landed on the trunk and then the chest. Unfortunately, the chest broke and we tidied up some very interesting paperwork and some other bits and bobs that we’re looking into now, and which I’m quite sure will not be of use. And Jack was good enough not to take the remnants of the chest out too.

Keep your spirits up, it won’t be long. We only have to find out who did the you-know-what, and you’ll be O.U.T. in no time.
